Scope question

Postby Serbonze » Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:45 pm

I have never used a scope on an AR before, only a RDS or irons. However, I got a great deal on one from a member here through the EE which will be mounted on my current upper as soon as my new one comes in.

So here comes my question, which will probably make me look foolish, but I'll blame it on ignorance. I've seen many pictures of ARs with large scopes, and some of them have a fold down rear BUIS mounted below it. I understand the point of the BUIS, but what I don't understand is how the user is going to operate that BUIS when the scope is not utilizing a QD mount. If it is hard mounted (let's say with rings) and for some reason it stops working, how are you going to remove it to get to the back up sight?

This is under the assumption that you are not at the range where you can just pop out your tools and remove it. But in that case, is the BUIS even necessary?

I get that, but I guess I wonder the reasoning behind having them if they are not accessible?

If you look at the type of rings they use.....often they have a small hole in them to make it easy to stick an allen wrench or mutitool in the hole to quickly remove they scope. In competition I have no reason to have a set of BUIS since we have the option of changing uppers for a like styled upper if ours fail. Real life....if your scope fails.....wouldn't it be nice to have a set of zeroed BUIS?

With phil here. BUIS are there in conjunction with your scope if the scope fails for some reason. For a hunting rifle like mine typically are, there's no need in them.

I'm putting a Leupold Mark AR scope on my SPR, when it's complete next month - as per SOP, I'll ALSO have some Troy BUIS on it as well.

Since the scope will be in a LaRue LT-139 QD mount, that means I can knock it off in a couple of seconds, should it go down, and transition be necessary.

To run BUIS, and a scope, WITHOUT a QD mount, is a little self-defeating, however.

Not really,.......a person may wish to leave the sights installed, once mounted & sighted in.
I have always used quick detach mounts like the Larue models.

I've also been looking at the Leupold AR series scopes for my SPR/AR... Thinking about the 3-9x40mm... It gets great reviews...

I love the LaRue LT-139 mounts... but they are really pricey... Leupold makes a QD mount that is less than half of the price of the LaRue mount... Of course it doesn't locate the scope as far forward as the 139 LaRue mount does... still deciding...

LaRue mounts do rock... Just hate paying over half the cost of the scope for a mount...

That looks super!!!

Is that a 3-9x40mm scope? How do you like it? Is that the Mil-Dot reticle?

Sure looks good with that LaRue mount... Is that a LT-104?

Sorry for all the questions!
