.300 Balckout

Postby Shaniac » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:52 pm

Does anybody have any experience with the relatively new .300 Blackout cartridge? I am looking to build an upper chambered for a larger round than the 5.56/.223 to hunt whitetail with and the .30 RAR is out of my budget. I read an article in the January 2012 G&A edition (yes the January edition is already out). on the .300 Blackout round and after browsing the internet it seems that I can replace the barrel on one of my current AR's since the .300 Blackout uses the same BCG and magazines as a 5.56.

Just wondering if anybody has any range experience with both sub-sonic and super-sonic rounds...as far as distance and accuracy.

I have only put 150 supersonic rounds through mine but it seems to be everything I though it would be. I don't have any measured groups to post up however.

Its a 16.5" LW w/ carbine length gas system. It shoots soft and smooth. As soon as some range ammo hits the shelfs I'll be able to share more.

I have no experience with the 300 B. O., however I do have a 6.8 SPC AR that I have been using for a couple years now. It is a great round and really puts the smack on deer. The interchangeability is not as simple as the .300 though, and to the best of my knowledge will not reliabily cycle the action with subs unless you have it set up with pistol length gas tube and a faster twist barrel (1 in 9) compared to the 1 in 11 barrel that is recommended for shooting the hotter loads.
The 300 B.O. does have some appeal though for shooting subs w/ a can.
