Loading Self Defense Ammo....

Postby grunt167 » Sun Jan 23, 2011 10:34 pm

I've been taking any nickel cases I have and reloading them for my SHTF stock... So far I have 65 rounds of Nosler 150 gr. JHP over 9.0 gr. of HS-6.. According to the tables that should come out at 1100 FPS which looks like a good solid self defense load...

You tested 'em yet? My SD loads for .45 are Golden Sabers ('cause you can buy 'em by the thousand and they're excellent) and are tested to be reliable, accurate and somewhat powerful. I'm never sure if they even meet up with the warm loadings you buy from the factory. They seem hot enough in pressure signs, but I've found from experience that everything I've loaded is slower than I thought (when I had a chronograph).

I've shot 20 of them so far... Seemed snappy and every one functioned fine in my XDm... Seemed pretty accurate also...

Beings they're relatively cheap, I'd test a hundred for accuracy and reliability, iffen's I was you. That's they way I've done things in the past, learning about good HP's for my .45's.

From what I saw on Hodgdon's Load data site you are running .5 grs over the suggested max pressure data. It says the max should be 8.5 and I know from my experience running "Major 9" in competition with this powder that if you run that high pressure it can expand the primer pocket and ruin your brass! I had some brand new Starline I ruined on my first loading. HS6 is a great powder, a little dirty, but you can get really good accuracy out of it.

The manual I went off of shows 9.2 gr. as the max load with the 150 gr. JHP but I'll check the first few rounds for any issues before I rip off a full mag... Thanks for the heads up.. There is a large discrepancy between the Loadbook manual I've been using and the Hogdon site...
